I Recognize the Cult Because I Escaped It

A personal, urgent, and unflinching exploration of Christian nationalism, how it weaponizes faith, how Trump exploited it, how I survived inside it, and why the real threat extends far beyond one man.

I Was Raised in It — But I Never Fully Believed It

I need to say this clearly:

I was raised inside Christian nationalism.

But I never fully believed it.

There was always a quiet discomfort inside me.

A low-grade nausea.

A constant sense that something was… off.

Even as a child.

Even before I had language.

I absorbed the rules.

I memorized the verses.

I participated.

But deep down, I did not recognize the God they were describing.

Their God felt small.

Mean.

Obsessed with control.

Terrified of questions.

Fixated on punishment.

And yet…

I was still in it.

Because when you’re born into a system, you don’t experience it as indoctrination.

You experience it as reality.

You don’t ask, “Is this true?”

You ask, “How do I survive this?”

That distinction matters.

Knowing Something Is Wrong Does Not Set You Free

This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of cult environments:

You can sense something is wrong and still be trapped.

You can doubt privately and still comply publicly.

You can feel sickened and still participate.

Because escape is not just intellectual.

It is social.

Familial.

Financial.

Psychological.

Existential.

Leaving means:

Losing community.

Losing belonging.

Losing safety.

Losing identity.

Losing God as you were taught to understand God.

That is not a small loss.

That is a psychological death.

So when people say,

“Why don’t they just leave?”

They have no idea what they’re asking or what that means.

Coming Out of It Was Hell

There is no romantic version of deconstruction.

There was no triumphant moment.

There was grief.

Terror.

Disorientation.

Rage.

Shame.

Loneliness.

I had to dismantle an entire internal operating system.

I had to rebuild morality from scratch.

I had to learn how to think without permission.

I had to face how much of my fear had been manufactured.

I had to grieve years of my life shaped by lies.

I had to accept that people I loved were never who I thought they were.

I had to accept that institutions I trusted were built on control.

It was brutal.

It was destabilizing.

It was necessary.

And I am free now.

Actually free.

Not “Christian free.”

Not “free but still terrified.”

Free.

That’s why I speak.

Trump Activated a Machine That Already Existed

When Trump ran the first time, I didn’t see a political anomaly.

I saw a ritual.

I saw a system sliding a new figure into a familiar role.

The “flawed man God uses anyway” archetype.

They’ve been training people for this their entire lives.

King David.

Samson.

Cyrus.

They were ready.

Trump did not persuade evangelicals.

He was recognized by them.

Like a key fitting a lock.

How Scripture Becomes a Weapon Without Changing a Single Verse

Christian nationalism does something incredibly sophisticated:

It overlays American identity onto biblical identity.

Not explicitly.

Implicitly.

Through repetition.

Through implication.

Through tone.

Through framing.

America becomes God’s chosen nation.

Americans become God’s chosen people.

The Constitution becomes a sacred text.

The Founding Fathers become prophets.

Enemies of conservative politics become enemies of God.

None of this is biblical.

All of it is taught as if it is.

This creates a population that cannot separate:

Faith from nationalism.

God from country.

Criticism from blasphemy.

Once fused, that bond is nearly unbreakable.

Why This Is a Cult (Not a Metaphor)

Cults:

• Create absolute moral binaries

• Demand loyalty over conscience

• Discourage critical thinking

• Demonize outsiders

• Elevate leaders beyond accountability

• Reframe abuse as love

• Replace identity with group identity

Christian nationalism checks every box.

Calling it a cult is not rhetorical.

It is diagnostic.

If You Think This Ends With Trump, You Are Tragically Mistaken

Trump is a vehicle.

A prototype.

A proof of concept.

He demonstrated that:

A demagogue can fuse with religious myth.

A criminal can be sanctified.

A liar can be crowned “chosen.”

Democracy can be treated as optional.

The movement learned from him.

They are refining strategy.

They are building infrastructure.

They are playing a long game.

The Heritage Foundation Is Not a Think Tank — It Is an Engine

The Heritage Foundation has spent decades:

Writing policy blueprints.

Training judges.

Embedding operatives.

Seeding courts.

Drafting executive power expansions.

They do not hide their goals.

They want a Christian nationalist state.

They want to dismantle secular governance.

They want to erase church–state separation.

They want to roll back civil rights.

They want to criminalize queer existence.

They want to control women’s bodies.

They want an America where pluralism is dead.

Trump didn’t invent this.

He gave them a battering ram.

They will keep swinging it.

With or without him.

I Need You to Understand How Deep This Goes

This is not about “some extreme churches.”

This is not about “a few bad pastors.”

This is a vast, well-funded, coordinated ecosystem.

Universities.

Law schools.

Media networks.

Publishing houses.

Legal organizations.

Lobbying groups.

Political action committees.

All aligned.

All disciplined.

All patient.

They do not need a majority.

They only need leverage.

Why I’m Sounding the Alarm

Because I recognize the pattern.

Because I lived inside the factory where this ideology is manufactured.

Because I watched how minds are shaped.

Because I know how hard it is to escape once fully submerged.

Because I am free now.

And freedom comes with responsibility.

Silence is complicity.

Minimization is surrender.

Politeness is deadly in the face of authoritarian movements.

Final Questions

What happens when millions sincerely believe God wants them to rule?

What happens when compromise is framed as sin?

What happens when elections are treated as obstacles to divine will?

We already know.

History is screaming the answer.

I recognize the cult because I escaped it.

I was raised in it.

I survived it.

I dismantled it.

And I will not pretend this is normal.

This is a mass radicalization movement wearing the costume of Christianity.

And it is one of the greatest threats to democracy the modern world has ever faced.

If you think this story ends with Trump…

You are not paying attention.

And I need you to start.

The Way This Ends

So what’s the only way this stops?

What’s the only way this breaks?

What’s the only way we interrupt a movement that feeds on silence, denial, and normalization?

We have to see it.

We have to name it.

We have to expose it.

Out loud.

Relentlessly.

Collectively.

When do we stop pretending this is just a “difference of opinion”?

When do we stop softening our language to make dangerous things sound polite?

When do we admit that calling this what it is is not “divisive” — it’s responsible?

We have to talk about it in our families.

In our friendships.

In our communities.

In our classrooms.

In our art.

In our media.

In our politics.

What happens if we choose courage over comfort?

What happens if we choose truth over social ease?

What happens if we choose democracy over false unity?

Because this does not get solved by waiting.

It does not get solved by hoping it burns out.

It does not get solved by pretending one election fixes a decades-long project.

It gets solved by sustained awareness.

Sustained resistance.

Sustained pressure.

By building a culture that is harder to lie to.

A culture that recognizes propaganda.

A culture that values critical thinking.

A culture that protects pluralism like its life depends on it.

Because it does!
